Senate Moves to Codify Council

As MLC’s Communications and Social Media Manager, Liz Gullett keeps clients informed and up-to-date on the goings on in Lansing and the Capitol.

The Senate passed legislation codifying the Black Leadership Advisory Council (BLAC) as a permanent entity within Michigan’s government.

Key Points:

    • Senate Bill 840 was introduced by Senator Erika Geiss (D-Taylor).
    • Governor Whitmer created the council by executive order in 2020.
    • The council is charged with identifying barriers in the Black community in education, community safety, health, and business leadership.
    • BLAC acts in an advisory capacity to the governor to develop, review, and recommend policies.
    • It is housed within the Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity.

Next Steps:

    • The bill will be sent to the House for consideration.
