Through the primary election on August 6, we will highlight races for which the primary is the key race due to the voter base. The candidate’s website, professional information, and a sample of known endorsements are listed when available.

District Overview

The 9th House District is located in Wayne County and includes Hamtramck and portions of the City of Detroit. This is considered a safe Democratic district, and the primary winner shouldn’t have a problem winning in the general election.

Commentary

Speaker of the House Joe Tate was drawn into this district after seven House districts were court-ordered to be redrawn. He was elected by his peers to serve as Speaker of the House for the 2023 – 2024 term. Speaker Tate faces two opponents in the primary race, but we expect him to win the primary and general and serve another term in the House.

Democratic Candidates:

    • M. Nelson
    • Lory Renea Parks
    • Representative Joe Tate – State Representative, Marine Veteran, and former NFL player.

Republican Candidate:
