Through the primary election on August 6, we will highlight races for which the primary is the key race due to the voter base. The candidate’s website, professional information, and a sample of known endorsements are listed when available.

District Overview

The 8th Michigan House District is located in southeast Michigan. This is one of the districts impacted by the Michigan Supreme Court order to redraw a handful of House districts earlier this year after finding 2021 maps were racially gerrymandered.

Commentary

This primary race will be a good one to watch as a current and a former state representative are both running for this seat. Representative Helena Scott (D-Detroit) is seeking a third term in office, while former Representative LaTanya Garrett is running after previously being ineligible to run due to the former term limit laws limiting a person to three terms in the House. Under the recent changes to term limits in Michigan, Ms. Garrett is free to run again. This is a strong Democratic seat and whoever wins that primary race is all but assured to win in November.

Democratic Candidates:

    • LaTanya Garrett – Former state representative
    • Chris Gilmer-Hill
    • Representative Helena Scott – State representative, former legislative staffer and union organizer.

Republican Candidate:

    • Alex Kuhn
