As MLC’s Communications and Social Media Manager, Liz Gullett keeps clients informed and up-to-date on the goings on in Lansing and the Capitol.

Through the primary election on August 6, we will highlight races for which the primary is the key race due to the voter base. The candidate’s website, professional information, and a sample of known endorsements are listed when available.

District Overview

The 7th Michigan House District is located in southeast Michigan. This is one of the districts the Michigan Supreme Court ordered to be redrawn earlier this year after finding the 2021 map was racially gerrymandered.

Commentary

This district has a strong Democratic base making the primary race the one to watch in this seat. Incumbent Representative Abraham Aiyash (D-Hamtramck) opted against running for another term leaving this seat open.

Democratic Candidates:

    • Ernest Little
    • Tonya Myers Phillips – Attorney, adjunct professor at Wayne State Law School, and served on the Detroit Charter Revision Commission.
    • Abraham Shaw – Automotive technician and consultant.

Republican Candidates:

    • Barry Altman
