Through the primary election on August 6, we will highlight races for which the primary is the key race due to the voter base. The candidate’s website, professional information, and a sample of known endorsements are listed when available.

District Overview

The 16th House District is located in Wayne County, including portions of the cities of Detroit, Redford, and Livonia. This is one of the districts impacted by the Michigan Supreme Court order to redraw a handful of House districts earlier this year after finding 2021 maps were racially gerrymandered.

Commentary

This is considered a safe Democratic seat, making that primary race key to who will represent this district next year. Representative Stephanie Young is running for a third term in the House, facing one opponent in the primary race.

Democratic Candidates:

    • Keith Windham
    • Representative Stephanie Young – State Representative, former legislative aide, and Executive Director of Detroit’s Community Education Commission.

Republican Candidate:

    • Brian Duggan
