Legislation providing a one-time credit for live organ donors was signed into law by Governor Gretchen Whitmer this week.

Key Points:

    • House Bill 4361 was introduced by Representative Felicia Brabec (D-Pittsfield Twp.).
    • It provides a one-time tax credit of up to $10,000 to help cover additional expenses related to live organ donation that are not reimbursable.
    • Expenses may include costs for travel, lodging, lost wages, and child care.
    • The bill sponsor believes this will help increase organ donation in Michigan, thus saving lives.

“Organ donation means a great deal to me, and I’ve advocated for it passionately during my time in the House. I am proud to continue working to make it easier for Michiganders to become organ donors — changing lives and saving them too,” said Representative Brabec. “This tax credit will help increase donations and save lives by addressing major barriers for potential donors.”
