Michigan is known for having one of the most segmented and layered structures of government in the nation. The state has over 83 counties, 500 school districts, 276 cities, 257 villages, and 1,240 townships.

The state’s strict term limits has created an opportunity for a lot of local officials to run for and become state legislators. Conversely, some legislators have returned to their communities and continued public service at the local level. Through these relationships and others, MLC goes to work for clients at both the state and local level.
