$126 million is headed to schools providing supplemental funding for school safety and mental health services after a vote this week by the House and Senate.

Key Points:

    • House Bill 5503 was introduced by Representative Regina Weiss (D-Oak Park)
    • The bill had been in conference committee since June. This week, it was reported and adopted by the full House and Senate.
    • The legislation provides $125 million for per-pupil payments to be used for student mental health and school safety.
    • The bill also appropriates $1 million for a school safety tip line.
    • In the 2025 Fiscal Year budget, there was a $300 million reduction in school safety and mental health funding. Since that time, members of the Republican Caucuses and school leaders have asked for some, or all, of that funding to be restored.

Next Steps:

    • The bill will be sent to Governor Whitmer for consideration.
