Legislation sponsored by Representative Karen Whitsett (D-Detroit) allowing a non-disabled voter to pay for transportation in order to vote was given approval by the legislature this week.

Key Points:

    • Under current law, a voter can’t hire a motor vehicle to get to their polling location to vote. They can only use public transportation or accept a free ride.
    • This law would allow a voter to utilize a service such as Uber to get to their polling location.
    • A voter who can’t physically walk is currently able to hire a service in order to vote.

Next Steps:

    • The bill will be sent to Governor Whitmer for consideration.
