Legislation removing protections for the firearm industry from civil liability was reported by the House Judiciary Committee this week.

Key Points:

    • House Bills 6183, 6184, and 6185 were introduced by Representatives Stephanie Young (D-Detroit), Ranjeev Puri (D-Canton), and Kelly Breen (D-Novi).
    • The bills allow for civil action if they knowingly and recklessly create or contribute to a public nuisance or fail to implement reasonable controls.
    • The firearm industry could include those involved with the sale, manufacturing, distribution, importing, or marketing.
    • Under the legislation, a public nuisance includes injuries, endangerments, or threats.

Next Steps:

    • The bills were referred to the House floor for consideration.
