This week, Speaker Matt Hall (R-Kalamazoo) announced the members serving as chair of the House Judiciary and Oversight Committees for the 2025 – 2026 legislative term.
House Judiciary Committee:

- Chair – Representative Sarah Lightner (R-Springport)
- She’s serving her fourth term in the Michigan House of Representatives.
- Prior to her election, Representative Lightner worked as a paralegal specializing in criminal defense and family law.
- Additionally, she served as a Jackson County Commission.
- Representative Lightner attended Lansing Community College.
The chairwoman shared remarks at the announcement, reflecting her priorities for the term:
“The Judiciary Committee plays a critical role in making sure our laws reflect the needs of the people we serve and the officers who put their lives on the line every day. We will prioritize measures that support law enforcement, strengthen public safety, and hold criminals accountable. Our communities deserve to feel safe and protected, and I’m committed to ensuring law enforcement professionals have the support they need to do their jobs effectively.”
House Oversight Committee:

- Chair – Representative Jay DeBoyer (R-Clay)
- He’s serving his second term in the Michigan House of Representatives.
- Prior to election to the House, Representative DeBoyer served 12 years as clerk and register of deeds for St. Clair County.
- Additionally, he’s served as Clay Township’s trustee and supervisor.
- Representative DeBoyer has been a small business owner since 1994, with his business specializing in engineered lumber.
- He attended St. Clair Community College.
- This term, the Oversight Committee will follow a different and expanded structure with six subcommittees focusing on different areas.
