This week, Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed a series of bills making changes to firearm laws in Michigan. The new laws encompass changes the governor called for in her State of the State address earlier this year.

Specifics within the newly signed laws include:

    • Require an individual to keep a firearm either unloaded and locked with a locking device or stored in a locked box if a minor is, or could be, present
    • Exempts firearm safety devices from the sales and use taxes beginning 90 days after the legislation takes effect through December 24, 2024
    • Expands background checks to include all firearms
