Recently, Representative Abraham Aiyash (D), the House Majority Floor Leader, introduced HB 5902, an Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) bill, which creates a comprehensive Packaging Reduction and Recycling Program aimed at significantly reducing packaging waste in Michigan. This EPR bill seeks to hold producers accountable for the lifecycle of their products by imposing requirements for registration, reporting, and compliance with new recycling and reduction targets.  Producers would need to begin registering with the Packaging Reduction Organization and adhere to the new guidelines within one year of the bill’s enactment.

The bill has been referred to the Committee on Natural Resources, Environment, Tourism and Outdoor Recreation for consideration.
