Following a subpoena from the House Oversight Committee, the Department of State has provided an additional 1,900 pages of material. The materials from the eLearning center for Michigan clerks don’t contain sensitive information related to election security and thus have also been made available online for public review.

Background:

    • The House Election Integrity Committee requested election training materials that are provided to election clerks and stored on the Bureau of Elections E-Learning Portal.
    • In March, the chair of the committee, Representative Rachelle Smit (R-Shelbyville), testified before the Oversight Committee that she had not yet received all the requested documents from the department.
    • Oversight Chair, Representative Jay DeBoyer (R-Clay), sent a letter to the Department of State requesting the missing materials within 10 days.
    • The department did not meet the deadline of Monday, April 14, to provide the documents.
    • While the department did provide certain documents, the full list of requests wasn’t fulfilled, leading the committee to issue a subpoena for all requested documents.

Documents:

    • The materials include training newsletters to clerks by the Bureau of Elections, the clerk training accreditation manual, and the Election Day “flip chart” manual used by election workers at the polls.
    • With the addition of these materials, the department has provided over 3,000 pages of information.
    • The department will continue to release additional materials to the committee and on the public site once the department’s legal and election security teams are able to review them and redact any sensitive information.
