“You miss 100 percent of the shots you don’t take.” Wayne Gretzky
I keep this mantra in my mind every day, it guides why I continuously strive to learn new ideas and skills to be the best person and lobbyist. I’ve had the honor of serving clients through Michigan Legislative Consultants (MLC) for two years. My experience thus far has been eye-opening, and I continue to learn and grow as a professional in this field.
I was influenced to become a lobbyist by the movie, “Thank You For Smoking”. Although it’s not the greatest depiction of the industry or its members, it brought to light that I can combine my strengths into one position. As a lobbyist you must be persuasive, agile, coachable, and a builder of relationships. Since I have been at MLC, I have been able to test my strengths and build upon them. In the past two years, I have been able to expand my network and build strong relationships.
As I enter my third year, my goals are to learn more about becoming an expert in small business and government relations as well as bring on new clients. I lovingly describe myself as a “recovering attorney”, and these new goals will hone the techniques and skills I learned as an attorney. I want to be the go-to lobbyist when it comes to minority-owned/women-owned small businesses and understand all the avenues available to help them further their businesses, specifically in the realm of compliance and government regulations.
If you are a small business and are interested in expanding your influence, please reach out to me. I am looking forward to meeting you and having conversations on how we can partner with you to help you achieve your goals!
