The House Natural Resources, Environment, Tourism, and Outdoor Recreation Committee is working on a bill allowing local governments to have more autonomy to make their own ordinances.

Key Points:

    • Introduced by Representative Felicia Brabec (D-Ann Arbor).
    • Repeals a 2016 Act, which prohibited local governments from creating ordinances on containers such as bags, cups, bottles, etc.
    • If successful, this bill would allow local governments to impose fees, taxes, charges, or regulations regarding containers used for merchandise, food, or beverages from a food service or retail facility.

Next Steps:

    • The committee heard testimony on the bill last week and it remains before the committee for further consideration.
