The Michigan State Capitol Commission voted this week to ban weapons from within the building, including firearms.

Key Points:

    • There are exemptions, including a member of Capitol Security, a law enforcement officer licensed under the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards Act, or a federal law enforcement officer, among a couple of other exclusions.
    • An exception was made for members of the House and Senate to carry a concealed pistol if they have the proper license.

The Michigan State Capitol Commission:

    • The commission is comprised of the Secretary of the Senate, the Clerk of the House, two members jointly appointed by the Secretary of the Senate and the House Clerk, and two individuals appointed by the governor.
    • It’s responsible for managing, maintaining, and restoring the Capitol building and its grounds.
