January Revenue Increases

Michigan’s major taxes and net lottery revenue in January 2026 increased 16.7% from the prior year, totaling $3.5 billion. Total collections were approximately $113 million more than prior estimates.

Key Points:

    • General Fund tax collections came in $30.7 million higher than projected.
    • School Aid Fund tax collections were $73 million above estimates.
    • Net income tax revenue increased 12.8% from the prior year, totaling $1.8 billion.
    • Withholding payments reached a record high amount and came in $14 million higher than prior estimates.
    • Sales and use tax collections totaled $1.2 billion, a slight decline of 0.6% from January 2025.
      • Sales tax collections were down 6.5% from the prior year but $50.4 million above estimates.
      • Use tax collections increased 24.2% year-over-year and were $55.4 million above projections.
    • Sales tax collections from motor vehicle sales were 6.5% less than the prior year.
