The Michigan Gun Violence Prevention Task Force released its report outlining recommendations designed to reduce gun violence. Developed over the last year with input from a wide range of advocates, the report focuses on implementing what members believe are proven strategies. The Task Force was created by Governor Gretchen Whitmer in 2024 through executive order.
Recommendations include:
-
- Requiring waiting periods for all firearm purchases.
- Increase the age of eligibility to purchase a firearm to 21.
- Close the concealed pistol license loophole that allows an individual to purchase a firearm without a background check or permit.
- Ban ghost guns, which are untraceable firearms without serial numbers.
- Expand access to free locking devices to store firearms.
- Remove barriers for filing Extreme Risk Protection Orders and Personal Protection Orders.
In schools and communities, they recommend:
-
- Strengthen existing school safety legislation, ensuring students who are struggling can get the help they need.
- Standardize training for school resource officers and promote a single school safety tip line statewide.
- Support community violence intervention efforts to address the root causes of violence.
Recommendations regarding assault weapons include:
-
- Prohibit the possession of large capacity magazines.
- Prohibit the sale, possession, manufacture, or transfer of assault weapons.
- Ban automatic conversion devices that convert semiautomatic firearms into fully automatic guns.
The Task Force also recommends the creation of a Firearm Safety Policy Implementation Team to guide the rollout of policy and programmatic proposals they recommended.
