This week, the House Oversight Committee voted to authorize a number of subpoenas within the Department of Natural Resources (DNR), the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), and the Office of Attorney General.

DNR:

    • Two subpoenas seek documents pertaining to the department’s efforts to kill Canadian geese and its enforcement of pig farmers and game ranches.
    • For one subpoena, an Oversight Subcommittee had sought the documents through the department but were told it would take 150 business days to produce the documents.
    • The other subpoena is for the committee to have oversight of the program as they work through the budget process.

Attorney General:

    • Two subpoenas seek documents related to two investigations undertaken by the department.
    • The committee is seeking to review whether there were any conflicts of interest in the decision not to bring charges.

DHHS:

    • The subpoena compels Director Elizabeth Hertel to testify before the committee on September 9.
    • The committee is seeking her testimony about Child Protective Services and eligibility verification for assistance programs.
    • An oversight subcommittee asked her to testify in July; however, she wasn’t available on the date they provided. According to the subcommittee chair, they asked for dates that she was available, and they haven’t yet received dates.
