Bipartisan legislation was introduced that aims to protect children on social media and mature content websites.

Key Points:

    • House Bill 4429 and Senate Bill 284 were introduced by Representative Brad Paquette (R-Niles) and Senator John Cherry (D-Flint).
    • The bills implement a device-based age verification mechanism to verify a user’s age via a device’s operating system.
    • A device would share the age range with online sites or apps that require age verification.
    • Additionally, it provides the opportunity for parents to implement supervision tools and require their consent before a minor may download an app.

Next Steps:

    • The bills will be referred to committees next week for consideration.
