Board of State Canvassers Welcomes New Members

As MLC’s Communications and Social Media Manager, Liz Gullett keeps clients informed and up-to-date on the goings on in Lansing and the Capitol.

At its most recent meeting, the Board of State Canvassers welcomed two new members and elected a new chair and vice chair. The terms for both new members commenced on February 1, 2025, and expire on January 31, 2029.

Key Points:

    • Heather Cummings (D) was appointed by Governor Whitmer to replace Jeannette Bradshaw (D).
      • She’s an attorney specializing in union-side labor law and employment rights at the state and federal levels.
      • Additionally, she provides pro bono legal services, including Election Day voter protection efforts.
    • Paul Cordes (R) was appointed by the governor to replace Anthony Daunt (R).
      • He is the founder and owner of Pantlind Strategies.
    • The board elected Richard Housekamp (R) to serve as chair and Mary Ellen Gurewitaz (D) to serve as vice chair.

Board of State Canvassers:

    • The board is composed of four members, appointed by the governor with the advice and consent of the Senate.
    • Two board members are selected from each of the two political parties receiving the greatest number of votes in the last election for Secretary of State.
    • The board certifies election results and conducts recounts for state-level offices, canvasses nominating petitions filed with the Secretary of State and state-level ballot proposal petitions, assigns ballot designations and adopts ballot language for statewide ballot proposals, and approves electronic voting systems for use.
