Two state departments requested the Michigan Supreme Court to clarify the schedule of increases to Michigan’s minimum wage. The Court previously ruled the legislature’s use of adopt and amend on a ballot proposal to increase the minimum wage and paid sick time leave was unconstitutional and stated the laws under the proposal would take effect on February 21, 2025.

Key Points:

    • While the ballot proposal laid out a schedule for the increases, it needed to be altered to fit implementation in 2025.
    • Additionally, the departments asked for clarification on future increases tied to inflation and the schedule for increasing tipped wages.

Scheduled Increases:

    • The minimum wage will increase to $12.48 in 2025, $13.29 in 2026, $14.16 in 2027, and $14.97 in 2028.
    • The tipped wage will continue to increase in incremental amounts until it equals the minimum wage in 2030.
    • Instead of the traditional January 1 increases to the wage, the Court clarified future increases will take effect on February 21 of each year.
