Attorney General Dana Nessel issued a consumer alert warning for toll road users. A smishing scam involving a deceptive text claiming the consumer owes money for unpaid tolls from SunPass and warning of a $50 late fee if the balance isn’t settled immediately. The message includes a fake link, which is made to appear legitimate.

The signs to watch out for with a smishing text include:

    • An unsolicited message.
    • Sent from an unusually long phone number.
    • Includes a link that is likely shortened or scrambled.
    • Is written with a sense of urgency.
    • Contains grammatical and spelling errors.
    • Promises a reward or prize if the user responds or clicks a link.
    • Requests personal or financial information.

Consumers can report smishing texts to the Federal Trade Commission.
