LightnerRepresentative Sarah Lightner (R-Springport) serves as Minority Vice Chair of the House Appropriations Committee, serving as the ranking Republican member. The influential committee is responsible for crafting the state budget and overseeing all state appropriations and spending throughout the year.

Representative Lightner is serving her third term in the Michigan House of Representatives. In addition to serving on the standing Appropriations Committee, she serves on the following Appropriations Subcommittees: Corrections, General Government, and Judiciary. She’s also a member of the House Fiscal Agency Governing Committee.

Prior to her election to the House, she served as a Jackson County Commissioner. Before holding public office, Representative Lightner was a paralegal specializing in criminal defense and family law. In addition, she and her husband operate a small crop farm.

She represents the 45th House District in southern, mid-Michigan. The district includes portions of Calhoun, Jackson, and Kalamazoo Counties.

We asked Representative Lightner a couple of questions to learn more about her:

    • What’s your favorite travel destination outside of Michigan?
      • Representative Lightner – My favorite travel destination outside Michigan is Hawaii! I love the sunshine, laid-back atmosphere, and the beaches!
    • What’s your favorite hobby other than politics?
      • Representative Lightner – My favorite hobby is hunting in the fall. I bow hunt and do firearms season for deer on our property. I hunt as many days as possible because it helps recharge my internal batteries, the great outdoors is good for my soul, it’s my happy place. I’m sure most people in Lansing have had a Zoom with me in my deer blind! We have our own processing facility, so my husband and I process and smoke our meat to enjoy and share!
