Redrawn Michigan House of Representatives district maps were approved by a federal judicial panel this week, setting up the political districts that will be used in this year’s election and until the next census. At the end of last year, the U.S. District Court in Western Michigan ordered Michigan’s Independent Citizens Redistricting Commission to redraw seven House Districts that violated the U.S. Constitution’s Equal Protection Clause because they were racially gerrymandered.

Key Points:

    • The Court quickened the pace of redrawing the House districts due to the election later this year as all 110 House seats will be up for election.
    • The filing deadline for August’s primary race is April 23 and new approved district maps are critical for the process.
    • Six Michigan Senate seats were part of the ruling that must still be redrawn by the Commission and approved by the Courts.

The impacted districts are all currently held by Democratic members in Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb Counties.  The impacted districts that have now been redrawn are:

House:

    • District 1 – Representative Tyrone Carter
    • District 7 – Representative Helena Scott
    • District 8 – Representative Mike McFall
    • District 10 – Speaker of the House Joe Tate
    • District 11 – Representative Veronica Paiz
    • District 12 – Representative Kimberly Edwards
    • District 14 – Representative Donovan McKinney
