Governor Makes Appointments to the Court of Appeals

Governor Gretchen Whitmer announced two appointments to the Michigan Court of Appeals.

Adrienne Young to the Court of Appeals – Second District

    • Young is an Assistant Defender at the State Appellate Defender Office and a private practice appellate attorney.
    • She previously clerked with the Michigan Supreme Court.
    • Young graduated from the University of Chicago Law School. She earned her master’s degree in education.
    • The appointment was made to fill a partial term following the resignation of Judge Elizabeth Gleicher.
    • The term commences on February 20, 2024, and expires on January 1, 2025.

Philip Mariana to the Court of Appeals – Third District

    • Mariana has served as a deputy legal counsel in the Executive Office of Governor Whitmer since January 2019.
    • Prior to that, he practiced as an appellate attorney and worked as a litigator.
    • He previously clerked with the Michigan Supreme Court. He was also a federal judicial clerk in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit, the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, and the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan.
    • Mariana received his Bachelor of Arts from Harvard University and his Juris Doctor from the University of Pennsylvania Law School.
    • The appointment was made to fill a partial term following the resignation of Judge Douglas B. Shapiro.
    • The term commences on March 15, 2024, and expires on January 1, 2025.
