The Michigan Independent Citizens Redistricting Commission has three new members after selections were held this week, following the resignations of three members last month. As required by the Michigan Constitution, the Michigan Department of State held a live-streamed random selection this past Wednesday.

Key Points:

    • The new commissioners were randomly selected from the remaining pool of semi-finalist applicants who affiliate with the same party as the departing commissioners.
    • The new members are Elaine Andrade, Donna Callaghan, and Marcus Muldoon.
    • In December, a U.S. Federal Court ordered 13 House and Senate districts must be redrawn in Michigan. That case is currently ongoing and questions remain if the commission will be responsible for redrawing those districts.

Michigan Independent Citizens Redistricting Commission:

    • It was approved by a majority of Michigan voters in November 2018.
    • The commission is responsible for drawing political districts in Michigan, following the national census every ten years.
    • There are 13 members on the commission; four who affiliate with the Republican Party, four who affiliate with the Democratic Party, and five people who do not affiliate with either major political party.
