State of the Great Lakes Released

As MLC’s Communications and Social Media Manager, Liz Gullett keeps clients informed and up-to-date on the goings on in Lansing and the Capitol.

A report outlining the progress made in cleaning up pollution in the Great Lakes, the momentum behind fisheries management, strategies to compact invasive aquatic species, and more was released this week. The Office of the Great Lakes, housed within the Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy, prepares and submits the annual report to the legislature, exploring major accomplishments, issues, and initiatives related to the health and sustainability of the Great Lakes.

Topics within the report include:

    • Efforts to keep invasive carp out of the Great Lakes.
    • Highlights of new investments that protect public health and the environment.
    • A progress report on the construction of a second passage for 1,000-foot freighters in the Soo Locks.
    • A look at the MI Healthy Climate Plan’s “30 by 30” goal of conserving 30% of Michigan land and water by 2030 to lower carbon emissions.
    • Increasing the capacity of water facilities to address a changing climate, protect health and safety, and reduce flood risks.
    • A multistate study considering the impact of future conditions on communities, infrastructure, and habitat along the Great Lakes shoreline.
