This week, the Michigan Liquor Control Commission (MLCC) celebrated the 90th anniversary of the repeal of Prohibition. Michigan became the first state in the nation to ratify the 21st Amendment on April 10, 1933, starting the process of repealing national prohibition. On December 5, 1933, Prohibition officially ended nationwide.

Key Points:

    • The MLCC was created through Public Act 64 of 1933.
    • The Commission serves as Michigan’s wholesaler of distilled spirits, enforcing liquor laws in the state.
    • Additionally, it’s responsible for licensing manufacturers and sellers of liquor, overseeing the almost $2 billion spirits business.
    • Michigan has 23,199 retailer licensees (9,120 on-premises retailers and 14,079 off-premises retailers), 113 wholesalers, and approximately 900 businesses that have a manufacturer license.
    • Among the 17 control states, Michigan has the largest selection of distilled spirits products available for consumers.
    • From 2012-2021, the MLCC transferred $4.5 billion in revenue to the State’s General and School Aid funds.
