Secretary Benson Signs Elections Reforms

As MLC’s Communications and Social Media Manager, Liz Gullett keeps clients informed and up-to-date on the goings on in Lansing and the Capitol.

While serving as acting governor, Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson signed legislation aimed at improving election efficiency and protecting equal access.

Key Points:

    • Introduced by Representative Julie Rogers (D-Kalamazoo), the bill requires the Secretary of State to maintain a web portal that allows qualified and registered electors to request an absent voter ballot.
    • While the SOS already maintains this portal, this law makes it a statutory requirement moving forward.

The Michigan Constitution provides for the secretary of state to assume the role of acting governor in the event the governor and lieutenant governor are away for business. Secretary Benson is the third secretary of state in the last 35 years to sign legislation related to elections.
