By 2040, Michigan will get 100% of its energy from renewable sources under legislation signed into law by Governor Gretchen Whitmer. The move towards clean energy will occur in incremental stages, beginning with a 50% standard by 2030 and a 60% standard by 2035.

Key Points:

    • Improve energy efficiency and waste reduction programs.
    • Establishes the Office of Worker and Community Economic Transition to support communities and workers impacted by the transition to clean energy.
    • Gives authority to the Michigan Public Service Commission to approve large-scale clean energy projects.
    • Authorizes the Michigan Public Service Commission to consider climate and equity in their regulatory decisions.
    • Protects farmers’ right to host solar projects on their land.

The new laws deliver on the proposals in Governor Whitmer’s MI Healthy Climate Plan, which laid out a roadmap for Michigan’s clean energy future.
