Candidates File for Open House Seats

Following the announcement of special primary and general elections to fill two open House seats, 12 candidates filed to run in the primaries. The 13th and 25th House districts were left vacant after former Representatives Lori Stone and Kevin Coleman won mayoral elections in the hometowns earlier this year. Both seats have majority Democratic bases and are expected to be won by Democratic candidates, making the primary races key.

These elections are especially important as the House has a 54-54 split majority following their resignations. While Speaker Joe Tate (D-Detroit) retained his leadership of the chamber, to pass legislation either party would need at least one vote from the other party as 55 affirmative votes are needed. This will slow the Democratic agenda until they regain their majority following the April election.

13th House District – Located in Wayne and Macomb Counties, including portions of Warren and Detroit. The seat has a 68% Democratic base.

    • LaMar Lemmons (D), former State Representative
    • Suzanne Ostosh (D)
    • Mai Xiong (D)
    • Brandon Cumbee (R)
    • Curtiss Ostosh (R)
    • Ronald Singer (R)

25th House District – Located in Wayne County and includes the city of Wayne and portions of Westland and Canton. The district has a 62% Democratic base.

    • Peter Herzberg (D)
    • Melandie Yvonne Hines (D)
    • Shannon Rochon (D)
    • Andrea Rutowski (D)
    • Layla Taha (D)
    • John Powell (R)

The special primary election will be held on January 30, 2024, and the special general election will be held on April 16, 2024.
