Following the announcement of special primary and general elections to fill two open House seats, 12 candidates filed to run in the primaries. The 13th and 25th House districts were left vacant after former Representatives Lori Stone and Kevin Coleman won mayoral elections in the hometowns earlier this year. Both seats have majority Democratic bases and are expected to be won by Democratic candidates, making the primary races key.
These elections are especially important as the House has a 54-54 split majority following their resignations. While Speaker Joe Tate (D-Detroit) retained his leadership of the chamber, to pass legislation either party would need at least one vote from the other party as 55 affirmative votes are needed. This will slow the Democratic agenda until they regain their majority following the April election.
