Michigan drivers would be prohibited from using a mobile device while driving under a bipartisan package passed by the House.

Key points:

Under the proposal, a driver would be fined by increased amounts beginning with the first violation and have points added to their driving record for a second or subsequent violation. If they violated the prohibition three or more times, the courts could require the driver to take a driver improvement course.

Additionally, the Michigan State Police would issue a report to the governor and legislature with information related to violations of using a mobile electronic device while operating a motor vehicle or school bus.

Next steps:

The bills were referred to the Senate Civil Rights, Judiciary, and Public Safety Committee for consideration.
