With transit remaining a top issue for residents and businesses, Michigan will utilize $7 million in Federal funds to improve transportation efficiency and safety. The funds are from the Strengthening Mobility and Revolutionizing Transportation (SMART) grants program from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. Michigan had the second-highest number of projects funded, receiving the third most total funding in the nation.
The four awarded projects are:

  • Detroit Mobility Optimization through Data for Equity and Safety – $2 million was awarded for this project to create smart intersections by leveraging the existing traffic camera network and deploying AI software solutions.
  • Advancing Rural Mobility: Michigan Public Transit Open Data Standards Program – $1,310,447 will be spent to leverage open standard data, making real-time public transit information accessible in rural Michigan.
  • Blue Water Bridge International Smart Freight Corridor – This project was awarded $1,806,218 to implement a proof of concept for a smart corridor for truck-borne goods movement and improve trade and border crossing efficiency.
  • V2X Technology in Oakland County – $2 million will be utilized to create a framework for deploying C-V2X technology in a sustainable manner, enhancing safety and communication between vehicles and infrastructure.
