This week, the Senate approved legislation impacting workers in Michigan. Named “Restoring Worker’s Rights”, the bills repeal right-to-work laws in Michigan and restore the state’s prevailing wage.

Senate Bill 34, sponsored by Senator Darrin Camilleri (D-Trenton), passed in concert with House Bill 4004, will repeal the right-to-work law passed in 2012. The House bill includes an appropriation, which makes it referendum-proof. The House bill will be sent to Governor Gretchen Whitmer for her consideration. The Senate bill was referred to the House Labor Committee for consideration.

Senate Bill 6, sponsored by Senator Veronica Klinefelt (D-Eastpointe), restores Michigan’s prevailing wage law. Under this proposal, all workers on contracts to build roads, bridges, and schools, must be paid the prevailing wage in the area where the project will occur. The bill was referred to the House Labor Committee for consideration.
