Traditionally, a voter must request an absentee voter ballot application, however, due to COVID-19 Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson announced her office will mail an application to voters for the upcoming May 5 election, without a request. Following weeks of discussions between Secretary Benson and local clerks, several clerks have postponed items that would have been up for election until the August election. However, some areas don’t have that option as they have school district millages and bonds that will run out and need to have the voters renew them next month. For those areas that don’t postpone, the Bureau of Elections will mail the absent voter ballot applications to the voters within that area. This will allow Michigan residents to vote, while maintaining social distancing and protecting their health.
