This week, State Superintendent Brian Whiston called on the legislature to improve funding for Michigan schools. In June, a state-funded Education Finance Study was released and this week the findings were presented to the State Board of Education. The Superintendent noted the study showed the disparity in funding between school districts, as well as the effects of poverty on a child’s education, in addition to the need to invest more specifically to help low-income students and English language learners. He pointed to Massachusetts, which began investing heavily in education over a decade ago. According to Superintendent Whiston, since the additional investment began, Massachusetts has seen positive outcomes for its students and is ranked as a very high academically achieving state.
