State Senator Resigns, Committee Replacements Announced

Mar 09, 2018

Last Friday, State Senator Bert Johnson (D-Highland Park) resigned his seat in the Michigan Senate. The announcement came after he pled guilty to charges stemming from an investigation into a ghost employee. The former Senator waived his right to hold public office as part of the guilty admission.

Governor Rick Snyder can call for a special election in the 2nd Senate District, which includes Grosse Pointe, Grosse Pointe Farms, Grosse Point Park, Grosse Pointe Woods, Hamtramck, Harper Woods, Highland Park, the Village of Grosse Pointe Shores, and a portion of the City of Detroit. “If the governor does call for a special election, he will most likely line it up with the already scheduled elections in August and November,” said Tony Des Chenes of MLC.

In the wake of his resignation, Senate Majority Leader Arlan Meekhof (R-West Olive) announced committee appointments to fill the vacancies created by his departure:
