This week, Representative John Kivela (D-Marquette) unexpectedly passed away. He was serving his third and final term in the Michigan House, representing the 109th House District in the Upper Peninsula. Before serving in the legislature, he worked in the automotive field. He was first elected to the Marquette City Commission in 2006 and served as Mayor of Marquette from 2008 to 2012.
The visitation and funeral service will take place this Saturday, May 13 at the Great Lakes Room in the University Center at Northern Michigan University. Visitation begins at 10 a.m., followed by the funeral service at 2 p.m.
Representative Kivela leaves behind his wife, Sandy, and two children, Shelby and Andrew.
