State IT Projects Task Force Formed

Jun 07, 2019

House Appropriations Chair Shane Hernandez (R-Port Huron) appointed a bipartisan special task force to investigate and help resolve alleged cost overruns and inefficiencies plaguing state information technology projects. According to Chairman Hernandez, state departments too often start IT projects that cost more and perform worse than expected, with little oversight. The task force members include:

    • Representative Mark Huizenga (R-Walker), Chair
    • Representative Annette Glen (R-Williams Township)
    • Representative Mary Whiteford (R-Casco Township)
    • Representative Terry Sabo (D-Muskegon)
    • Representative Abdullah Hammoud (D-Dearborn)

Additionally, as part of the 2019-2020 Fiscal Year budget, Chairman Hernandez is pushing for a 25% spending reduction in state department information technology budgets. The goal is to bring state departments to the table prepared to document and justify their IT needs with numbers and evidence. The task force will build upon that effort by helping find solutions and efficiencies while holding state departments accountable for overspending.
