The State Administrative Board voted to approve Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s proposal to increase oversight within the state procurement process by decreasing the threshold for additional approval for state contracts from $500,00 to $250,000. In 2018, the threshold for approval was changed from $250,000 to $500,000 allowing departments to approve state contracts up to $500,000 without approval from the State Administrative Board. Under the change, departments can approve contracts under $250,000, but once they reach that threshold they will come before the board for approval.
The State Administrative Board oversees all administrative activities of state departments and agencies, including the approval of contracts and leases. The board’s membership is comprised of the governor, lieutenant governor, secretary of state, attorney general, state treasurer, superintendent of public instruction, and the director of the department of transportation.
