Michigan is one step closer to finalizing the state’s first-ever Independent Redistricting Commission. This week, 200 semi-finalists were selected through random selection from a pool of 9,326 applications. The semi-finalists are comprised of 60 applicants who affiliate with the Democratic Party, 60 with the Republican Party, and 80 applicants who don’t affiliate with either party. Per the Michigan Constitution, the semi-finalist pool must be representative of the geographic and demographic makeup of the state. Data to determine the demographic makeup of the state was pulled from the 2018 American Community Survey 5-Year Estimate.
The semi-finalist applications will now be delivered to the legislature, where leaders in both chambers and parties will have the month of July to each strike up to five applicants from the pool, per the Michigan Constitution. The final selection for the 13 commissions will take place in August.
