Legislation has been announced that would allow college athletes to receive compensation for their name, image, and likeness. Currently, this practice is banned by the NCAA, however they have stated they will allow this at some point in the future. This proposal would put the framework to allow compensation for athletes into state law. The proposal also allows agents to enter into contracts with student-athletes, which is currently considered a crime in Michigan. If signed into law, the plan would be effective in July 2020. The legislation is anticipated to be introduced in the coming weeks.
