This week the Michigan Department of State released the 2020 presidential primary candidates list. Under state law, the Secretary of State is required to issue a list of individuals “generally advocated by the national news media to be potential presidential candidates” for the Republican and Democratic parties for the presidential primary election. Following the release, the chairs of the Michigan Democratic and Republican Parties submitted their list for candidates who should be on the primary ballots. Of note, while the Secretary of State included four candidates for the Republican primary race, the Michigan Republican Party only included President Donald Trump on their list. The Michigan Democratic Party did not make any changes to the list released by the Secretary of State.
Candidates not placed on the list by the department or the party chairs may obtain ballot access for Michigan’s presidential primary if they file a nominating petition with the Secretary of State by December 13.
Michigan’s presidential primary will be held on March 10, 2020. To view the listings from the Secretary of State, the Michigan Democratic Party, and the Michigan Republican Party, please click here.
