On Friday, January 6, the Michigan Supreme Court unanimously selected Justice Stephen Markman to serve as its new Chief Justice. Justice Markman was appointed to the Court in 1999 and reelected in 2000, 2004, and 2012. He succeeds Justice Robert P. Young, Jr., who served as Chief Justice since 2011. “Justice Young did an incredible job streamlining and modernizing Michigan’s courts during his tenure as Chief Justice. We are looking forward to Justice Markman expanding on the judicial branch’s achievements as he takes over in his new role as Chief Justice,” stated Cami Pendell of MLC.
Prior to joining the Court, Justice Markman served on the Michigan Court of Appeals and practiced law with the firm of Miller, Canfield, Paddock and Stone in Detroit. Prior to that, he served as the United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Michigan and as Assistant Attorney General of the United States. He’s also served as Chief Counsel of the U.S. Senate Subcommittee on the Constitution and as Deputy Chief Counsel of the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee.
