This week, President Donald Trump appointed Michigan Supreme Court Justice Joan Larsen to the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. The court has jurisdiction over federal appeals from the states of Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, and Tennessee. Justice Larsen has served on Michigan’s highest court since her appointment on September 30, 2015 by Governor Rick Snyder. Prior to her appointment on the bench, Justice Larsen taught at the University of Michigan Law School and was special counsel to the Dean. She previously clerked for a U.S. Court of Appeals Judge and for Justice Antonin Scalia of the Supreme Court of the United States. Justice Larsen graduated first in her class from Northwestern University School of Law.
Her appointment will need to be confirmed by the United States Senate. If she is confirmed to the federal court, Governor Rick Snyder will make an appointment to the Michigan Supreme Court to fill the vacancy that would be created. This would be the Governor’s fifth appointment to the Michigan Supreme Court.
