More areas that have been disproportionately impacted by marijuana prohibition and enforcement could be designated as part of the Social Equity Program under an expansion of regions announced this week. The Michigan Regulation and Taxation of Marijuana Act of 2018 required the Marijuana Regulatory Agency (MRA) to develop “a plan to promote and encourage participation in the marijuana industry by people from communities that have been disproportionately impacted by marijuana prohibition and enforcement and to positively impact those communities.” MRA will now begin visiting the expanded regions and will take applications to participate in the program beginning on November 1.
Applicants in the regions participating in the Social Equity Program benefit from a reduction of up to 60% off the application fee, the initial license fee, and future renewal fees.
