Under legislation introduced this week, public safety personnel could be appointed to local planning commissions. Introduced by Representative Annette Glenn (R-Williams Twp.), the bill allows local government officials to appoint volunteer and paid on-call police officers, firefighters, and medical first responders to local planning commissions. Current law bans volunteer and on-call public safety personnel from planning commissions because they are technically considered employees of the local unit of government. According to the bill sponsor, this would provide local governments more options to appoint local residents, who are knowledgeable about the community, to be appointed to a commission. The legislation has been referred to the House Local Government and Municipal Finance Committee for consideration.
