Hate crimes will be investigated and prosecuted by a new unit, housed within the Criminal Division of the Department of Attorney General. In her announcement, Attorney General Dana Nessel urged members of the public and other law enforcement agencies to contact the Hate Crimes Unit if they have knowledge of, or are a victim of, a crime motivated by hate. The department will follow-up on every credible tip, launch an independent investigation when sufficient cause exists, and will offer departmental resources to assist local and federal law enforcement partners.
Assistant Attorney General Sunita Doddamani will serve as lead prosecutor in the unit. Since graduating from Wayne State University Law School, she has served more than 15-years as a prosecutor and has tried more than 150 felony cases. Special Agent David Dwyre will serve as lead investigator.
